- I hope to develop a constructive and empathetic listening habit. I will know I have achieved this goal when I consistently understand my clients and employees prior to communicating my perspective.
- I want to develop conversational skills in a foreign language and visit a foreign country as a start to better understanding that culture.
- I hope to develop a more stringent set of critical values for the resources I use. This includes the network of information I refer to and the network of information I suggest to my clients and employees.
- I hope to be as altruistic as my husband. I will know I have achieved this when the thought of 'credit' for work well done does not even enter my head as I approach group work.
Overall, I will strive to retain a humble, open stance as a leader, focusing on evaluating and adapting to those I follow. There is an old camp counselor adage that I keep in mind: just because one person needs CPR does not mean they all do. It would be silly to perform CPR on a functioning, breathing person just because another person required that procedure. I liken this to leadership - it would be silly to apply one style or method across the board without first considering the needs and circumstances of those I lead.
As a leader, I must be prepared to adapt to followers as individuals and also to followers within certain settings. If I demonstrate a willingness to adapt, I am also modeling the behavior I wish my followers to exhibit. I can then ask them to seek agile adaptation as a normal course because I was willing to do so in their behalf.
I will still strive to meet the goals and objectives I listed previously along with the newest one. I will also use the word 'adapt' as my mantra. I sought out this class because I hope to be a good, useful leader. I believe that continued work and continued focus will help me achieve that end.
